What are your joys? Gardening, traveling, singing, playing the piano? Mine include yoga, dancing, and music. Yoga is not only a joy for me; it is one of my self-healing practices, along with meditation and play. Spending time each day in one, if not more, of our joys is where healing often occurs.

NEUROBICS
Neurobics are exercises for the brain -- based on neuroscience research -- designed to produce natural brain nutrients, called neurotrophins, that prevent memory loss and increase mental fitness by stimulating nerve cells in various parts of the brain.
Developed by Dr. Lawrence C. Katz, Professor of Neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, the basic principle behind Neurobics involves using our five senses, along with our “sixth” sense -- emotions -- in non-routine experiences, which activates new brain circuits in forming associations between different types of information.
Nerve cells need to keep communicating to stay healthy. Neurobic exercises stimulate the production of nutrients that grow brain cells -- keeping the brain younger and stronger. These exercises are wacky and fun, and can be done any time, anywhere.
Neurobic Exercises
¤ Walk backwards to the kitchen or bathroom.
¤ Brush your teeth or write a note using your non-dominant hand.
¤ Close your eyes when buying fresh fruits and vegetables, relying only on your spatial reasoning, memory and sense of smell and/or touch.
¤ Turn all pictures, calendars or clocks on your desk upside down for the day.
¤ Take a completely new route to work.
¤ Learn a new language

Overall Benefits of Neurobics
Contrary to popular belief, mental decline does not have to occur as we age. Memory loss is not due to the steady death of nerve cells, as once believed. Instead, it results from thinning out of dendrites, the branches on nerve cells that directly receive and process information from other nerve cells that forms the basis of me mory.
Research has proven that dendrites can actually grow in adult brains, especially when two or more senses and/or emotions are activated in novel ways. Thus, Neurobics can significantly help improve our memories while keeping our minds alert and alive through continuously active learning.
